Under the name of Meeting Point (a joint venture between the discussion groups run by the village's two churches) these suppers are intended to provide a means whereby residents who do not count themselves as belonging to any established church but who are, nevertheless, interested in hearing of Christian efforts in all walks of life, may share an enjoyable meal and listen to an excellent speaker while also raising money for a worthwhile cause. The speaker on this occasion is to be Michael Norris, resourcing officer for St Basil's church, Birmingham, which is now regarded as the foremost regional charity for young homeless people in the UK. Founded in 1972, its objective is to equip these young people for an independent life in the community, providing them meanwhile with accommodation, training for employment, free crèche facilities and re-settlement support. 290 young people are housed every night in 19 residential facilities in Birmingham and one in Solihull and it is thought that these figures may well represent the main reason for there being no `cardboard city' on the streets of Birmingham. Michael Norris should be a speaker well worth hearing. Tickets for this event are £5 each, obtainable from Jenny Phillips on 870596, Liz Nunn on 870246 or Mel and Carolyn Curnock at the Post Office. Lifts can be arranged on request.   more...

WHO WERE THEY?: Passers by the school last Saturday morning may have noticed a small gathering of village worthies sheltering from the icy wind, and deep in discussion. This was a site meeting for the parish council to discuss various planning applications which have been submitted, including one for some minor changes to the school's playing field. It may be the time to remind parishioners that local elections will be held in May. It is far more healthy to have competition for parish council representatives, so why not consider standing? A vast array of parish matters are discussed at meetings, including the possibility of footpath lighting, the maintenance of footpaths and right of way and the provision of amenities on the playing field.   more...
